Byrd focusing on re election with Spanishburg stop

Sen Robert Byrd plans another campaign swing from Washington to Mercer County including a June 28 appearance at Spanishburg Methodist Church. Rumors say Republican Cleve Benedict may challenge Byrd. Benedict to headline the Lincoln Day Dinner at Coal City Auditorium with tickets sold by Mercer County Republican Club members. Lincoln Day program features music and Benedict as keynote speaker.

Lincoln County school case tests funding for public education

In a suit labeled the Lincoln County school case the state Supreme Court directs Kanawha County Circuit Court to hear the case. If plaintiffs win, up to 400 million dollars a year in new taxes may be needed to raise poorer counties to equal per pupil spending. The defendants include state school officials and other state actors. The Legislature funds defense with fifty thousand dollars for consultants, while plaintiffs seek equal access to support. Governor Rockefeller offers no firm stance. The defense may introduce evidence on this year’s broad public education bill, notably its revised school aid formula and salary provisions.
