The West Virginia legislature adjourned after finalizing a social security act creating a department of public assistance with 65 county directors and a state advisory board. It authorizes $30 monthly pensions for indigent blind and seniors, funds dependent children at $8 to $12 a month, and allocates $3,000,000 for direct relief plus $2,500,000 from the federal social security act. The group outlined plans for district mass meetings July 7 to nominate a judge candidate August 8 and for a Huntington convention August 13. The committee endorsed Judge Howell M. Tanner for circuit court reelection and several candidates spoke.
