Chicago dispatch reports Taft leaders asserting total control of the convention as gossip of a third candidate swirls. Roosevelt supporters bolt and discuss rules while Hadley and Justice Huzacs are named as possible rivals amid internal realignments and committee changes.
Mexico reports from Santa Fe on June 20 describe an outpost clash where seven rebels were killed and sixteen wounded, with sixty horses lost. General Rabago claimed success in every skirmish, while rebel losses were described as gallant efforts. The incident is noted amid sessions of the Young Friends of America conference events.
Chicago June 20 Theodore Roosevelt hinted he might bolt the Republican party and form a new party under certain conditions. His supporters urged early action. a caucus declared the 78 seats fraudulently claimed would not bind delegates. Roosevelt said he would stay in the convention if those seats are seated, else he would remain but not participate.
In White Plains the state called Mrs Susan Merrill who ran houses in New York and admitted Thaw stayed there under fake names. She testified that Thaw’s counsel paid thousands to silence girl witnesses including 7000 and 3000 dollar sums. The revelations came amid Evelyn Thaw’s testimony in the Stanford White murder trial. A separate note from Winona Lake reports the start of the Summer Conference for missions and a Presbyterian youth gathering in Indiana.
In Chicago six Taft delegates at large from Arizona were seated 23 to 15 by the credentials committee. A motion to seat Roosevelt delegates was defeated with the Nebraska result noted. Meanwhile in Cuba battleship Nebraska arrived at Caimonera relieving Minnesota, which leaves Monday.
The months July through September are the designated periods for teachers institutes across the state. Institutes begin the week of July 22 and end the week of September 9 with locations in Mercer Athens Bluefield Minto Williamson Gerrison Alstersville McDowell Welch and Charleston. Instructors include principal L B Hil and Miss Mary Fontaine among others.
Chicago June 20 Roosevelt delegates after a two hour meeting adopt a plan to participate in regular convention sessions while caucuses determine each session's action. Rumors of Roosevelt releasing delegates swirled, but aides denied the claim, as Roosevelt pressed to continue the fight on his outlined principles.
Washington reports the revolutionary army in Cuba has divided with half under General Ivonez moving to the north coast and the other half under General Estonez heading to the south. Admiral Usher at Guantanamo sent the warning, but confirmation is lacking. Alarm persists at Guantanamo despite a quieter day.

Items include newspapers 700.00 printings 400.00 postage 408.18 stationer y 120.00 advertising 200.00 campaign buttons 93.75 pictures 44.00 travel 680.00. Dr Archibald Moore also filed for agriculture commissioner with 136.25 spent mainly on printing postage and ads. He says his support was not due to spectacular publicity or mail peddling misrepresentation.
Mammoth Springs Arkansas June 20 Sheriff M C Caruthers warned of a bank raid and hid with two deputies in the bank rear. They surprised three masked robbers as they forced the woman cashier into the vault and took cash. Ben Jones was shot and killed when the robbers resisted. Otto Burrow and Silus Davis surrendered.
Four persons were killed and two wounded in a feud between the Sharp and Waldron families at Sperries ranch near Sherman Texas. Miss Georgia Sharp killed one man and wounded another man and his wife before she herself fell.
West Virginia predicts generally fair conditions Friday and Saturday with little temperature change. Virginia follows with similar fair weather through Friday and Saturday, light variable winds and mostly west directions noted.
Judge Alton B. Parker of New York was named temporary chairman by the arrangements committee over William J. Bryan's protest. The panel also picked Urey Woodson as temporary secretary and John I. Moran as temporary sergeant at arms as the fight over Parker moves to the convention floor.
Flynn of Pittsburgh leaves the regular Republican party and confirms his switch while H G Watson is named to succeed him as national committeeman. Flynn has been a strong Roosevelt ally in the bid for a third term.
The convention opened at noon with Chairman Root presiding. Indiana delegate Watson moved a recess to 4 o'clock for committees to finish work. it passed and adjourned briefly. The hall was crowded as delegates awaited reports before a 5 pm reconvening and 11 am next day adjournment.
New York June 20 Woodrow Wilson arrives for a series of talks with political leaders from this and neighboring states as he continues his campaign for the presidency.
Woodrow Wilson will attend the Baltimore convention and stay at Sea Girt through the event. He will confer with upstate leaders and Tammany's Charles Murphy, maintaining close telephone contact with Wilson leaders during the convention. A private line will connect the governor to the convention from his Sea Girt cottage.
At the Republican convention in Chicago on June 20 the credentials committee seated twenty two Taft delegates including twelve from Florida after Roosevelt supporters pressed other contests. among contested seats approved were Alabama ninth district Arkansas fifth district and Arizona delegates at large.
Emporia June 20 The harvest season opens across a large Kansas region with experts predicting a record wheat crop surpassing last year. Statewide needs estimate at least 25,000 extra workers to harvest the crop.
A fire at the Hotel Elderhurst in Rockaway Beach caused thirty guests to flee from upper windows this morning. Ten guests sustained injuries, authorities reported as the blaze swept through the New York hotel.
Cambridge, Mass June 20 Harvard University America s oldest educational institution closed its 276th year graduating a class of more than 500 students The day included exercises and ceremonies typical of the occasion with the president fellows alumni and faculty attending The class of 1887 marks the 25th anniversary of its graduation leading the day s events from Massachusetts Hall to Sanders Theater and Memorial Hall.
At the Republican national convention in Chicago five minutes split two sessions, with a four hour gap. A west gallery shout of “We want Teddy” triggered calm but rapid disorder as officers in blue and police guarded the platform and hall after adjournment.
Chicago June 20 W J Bryan reports on the Republican convention he refuses to commit on the report of his opposition to Judge Parker as temporary chairman of the Baltimore gathering. He says there will be time to discuss it after the convention adjourns.
Washington June 20 Taft from White House discussions said to be convinced the nomination is secure and that Roosevelt is beaten. Observers report Taft believes no compromise candidate will emerge and his path to renomination remains clear.
Evelyn Nesbit Thaw, wife of Harry Thaw, testified in White Plains about the 1904 New York murder case by accusing her husband of poisoning food and planning to kill himself. The cross examination focused on her statements and alleged past events in their marriage.
The California delegation met this morning and prepared a resolution to withdraw the convention. They declare they will not be bound by the action thieves and reject the convention’s authority.
