The Chamber of Commerce in Bluefield secures a broader business alliance after a vote or decision that expands its influence. Local leaders and business owners celebrate the outcome and pledge to advance economic development initiatives.
The city voted quietly to issue 100000 in bonds for paving streets and extending the sewerage system. Supporters worked across wards with steady effort, while the contest lacked the usual political fervor.
The measure promoted by the chamber of commerce and civic leaders won 962 votes to 518 from a total of 1 480. Ward results show citywide support varied, with the largest backing in the fifth ward at 324 for and 43 against, and the measure cleared the required three fifths by 74 votes.
In Petersburg Virginia a bronze statue honoring Col Gowan and the Forty-eighth Pennsylvania volunteers killed at Petersburg Civil War front was unveiled. A statement from the former president Cleveland home says reports of his alarming condition are groundless. He suffers an acute indigestion with no operation planned, and Mrs. Cleveland confirms there is no danger. he is expected to recover in a few days.

Bedford Indiana June 20 unique wreck in the middle of the east tunnel at Tunneltown fourteen miles west from Mitchell. A Baltimore and Ohio passenger train ran through the tunnel at high speed ten minutes late. The engine tender left the track and mail, passenger and sleeping cars piled in a heap. The engineer fled the scene assuming the engine detached and sped to the next station fearing a collision. Cars were badly smashed though no one was seriously hurt.

Philip Lahm a war veteran and real estate dealer, shot himself in Central Park after playing with children near Fort Clinton. Before firing he tossed hundreds of coins into the air as kids scrambled for them. Lahm lived at 61 East 108th Street, near Fort Clinton.

Charles Edwards an electrician is under arrest in Brooklyn charged with horse theft and runabout theft. He allegedly claimed to be the man who killed President McKinley’s assassin Czolgosz. Edwards says he was convicted in 1891 for robbery, sentenced to fourteen years, and sent to Auburn prison.
