Obama unveils sweeping plan to overhaul financial regulation
Obama pitches a broad reform package aiming to curb risk and protect consumers. The proposal would empower the Fed to supervise large nonbank firms and create a Consumer Financial Protection Agency to regulate mortgages and credit products, plus higher capital requirements and oversight of hedge funds and some derivatives. Critics note gaps on compensation and complex derivatives, while proponents argue the meltdown proves the need for smarter regulation.
