Consol appeals permit for underground mine in West Virginia

Consol Energy filed an appeal with the West Virginia Surface Mine Board challenging the approval of Mettiki Coal LLC's 2000 acre underground mine permit in Grant and Tucker counties. The company fears increased water flow will raise treatment costs, while environmental groups argue the permit violates policy and state law by risking acid mine drainage and harming water quality. No hearing date has been set.
