No Deception In Contract Says Steelworkers Official
RED HOUSE West Virginia AP There was no arm twisting or deception by the United Steelworkers Union to defeat a proposed contract for striking railroad repair workers an official says Larry Ratliff an international representative disputed claims that the proposal was not fully explained to ACF Industries employees in West Virginia Pennsylvania and Illinois After the vote federal mediator Paul Bowers said the workers 12 week strike might have ended this week if the proposed contract terms had been presented fairly There was no arm twisting at this location Bowers said some members of the United Steelworkers negotiating committee reported what they wanted to in describing the contract proposal to employees of ACFs Shippers Car Line Division plants in Red House East St Louis Ill and Milton Pa Very frankly if it had been presented fairly I think it would have passed Bowers said ACF employees in the three cities have been on strike since March 4 when their contract expired Also on strike since March 4 have been plants in ACFs rail car manufacturing division including one in Huntington The two divisions are not covered by the same contract However Last weekend ACFs latest contract proposal for the three repair division plants was voted down by a one vote margin
