Virginia explores elk restoration in Southwest Virginia counties
Virginia regulators advance a draft elk management plan potentially expanding the state’s small elk population into Buchanan Dickenson and Wise counties. Public comment will continue through August with officials hoping to balance hunters endorsements against farm concerns about crop damage and disease risk. The plan, already drawing mixed emotions, aims to define restoration levels from active reintroduction to no action as about 50 to 100 elk are believed to have wandered from Kentucky into the area.
