Eleven cousins choose stomach removal to beat hereditary cancer
LOS ANGELES AP Eleven relatives including Mike Slabaugh forego stomachs to counter hereditary diffuse gastric cancer after learning they carry the CDH1 gene mutation. Eleven with the faulty gene had preventive total gastrectomies at Stanford and elsewhere, reducing cancer risk but altering digestion and lifestyle. Insurance covered much of the $65,000 to $85,000 cost. Researchers monitor long term effects as they study this rare family and other carriers worldwide.
