Tazewell to Raise Penalties for Criminal and Traffic Offenses
The Tazewell County Board of Supervisors adopted a plan to add 5 to the cost of each criminal or traffic case in district or circuit court to fund courthouse security. Sheriff Caudill said the revenue would hire more bailiffs and possibly station officers at the courthouse entrance. The ordinance takes effect July 1 and applies to arrests by sheriff state police and municipal departments. The board also held a public hearing on the FY 2002-2003 budget of about 78.27 million dollars, with adoption planned for June 25.

Yard sale and real estate signs flagged on highways
Virginia and West Virginia highway crews crack down on yard sale and real estate signs along rights of way. Officials say signs obstruct sight distance and can cause accidents, with enforcement via removal and potential billing, though ownership is often hard to prove.
