Washington reports Republicans pushed through a housing measure by 318 to 90. The house bill includes renewing government mortgage insurance up to 100 percent of value for new houses and priorities for veterans. Supporters say it will spur homebuilding while critics call it socialist.
Washington reports a night of deadlock as House and Senate fail to agree on foreign aid spending for the 16 nation European Recovery program. Over $6 billion to finance the recovery effort in doubt without timely action. Senator Taft urged delaying adjournment past tomorrow if a satisfactory appropriation is not reached.
Roper Raines of Bowling Green VA says he will ask delegate Frank Beasley to introduce a bill in the general assembly proposing a state law aimed at prompting men to wear capes in six from June 1 through August.
After 163 years scientists locate the bristle-thighed curlew nest near Mountain Valley Alaska ending a long mystery. Dr Arthur A Allen of Cornell found the site and wired the discovery to Dr Gilbert Grosvenor of the National Geographic Society. The curlew winters in the south seas and its cry resembles its name.
Washington June 18 Congress raced the clock and a senate filibuster to pass draft and major bills before adjournment this weekend. Taft predicted the 80th Congress could quit by tomorrow evening. The pace sharpened as Taylor fought a conference stalemate over a 90 day start for the draft and foreign aid, farm, and housing bills. President Truman warned of vetoes on legislation not serving the public interest. The House passed a draft bill 283 to 130 and a housing bill 317 to 90, with final reconciliation looming within 24 hours if Congress stays in session.
Mt. Carmel Pa June 18 Officials sorted through charred remains to identify 43 victims of a United Airlines Mainliner DC-6 crash. Only 16 identifications were made in 24 hours as relatives awaited word in Centralia and a morgue set up in a back alley garage. The Civil Aeronautics Board led the four pronged investigation with United Airlines, Douglas Aircraft and the Airline Pilots Association coordinating.
U S senator Revercomb announced Maj. Gen. Robert R. McClure will be the principal speaker at the West Virginia encampment of Veterans of Foreign Wars in Bluefield. McClure, commander of the second army, will speak on Friday evening June 25 and may attend the state meeting if the Republican national convention ends soon. The 51 year old native of Rome Georgia is a World War I II veteran who led Bougainville and later served as chief of all ground forces in the China theater.
Staunton, Va June 18. A letter to Trial Justice Court Judge W Terrell Sheehan from Augusta County describes a crime wave with outlaws from Rockbridge and Augusta counties stealing household goods including beans, corn and chicken feed. The writer asks for a state trapper to stop robberies and notes fear of masked hunters and dogs near their home. The message has spelling and punctuation irregularities but conveys urgent threats of theft and disruption.
Bluefield dedicates a $523,000 municipal parking structure in a ceremony with bands, out-of-state guests, and local officials. Mayor A Harry West leads remarks. Dr. Irvin Stewart of West Virginia University praises the project as democracy in action and envisions an auditorium atop the garage. A beauty contest and firemen’s ball conclude the day’s events.
International Harvester announced an 11 cent hourly raise for 61,000 workers across 21 plants, costing about $3 million annually. A company spokesman said the figure is final. CIO officers in Farm Equipment and Metal Workers could not be reached for comment as negotiations continue.

Miss Billie Tabor won Bluefield’s beauty contest at the firemen’s ball, earning the title Miss Bluefield and eligibility to compete in Miss West Virginia at Moundsville. Rebecca Barksdale placed second and Libby Taylor third. Tabor received an evening gown, bathing suit, portrait, and all-expenses-paid trip with a chaperone to the national contest.
Philadelphia June 18 AP supporters of Gov. Thomas E Dewey won a skirmish over Sen Robert A Taft for presidential nominating delegates. The 48 to 44 seating vote for a Georgia 16 vote delegation favored Dewey while Taft supporters claimed a Georgia group for Taft. Mississippi eight vote delegation seated for Taft. Delegates will be appealed to credentials committee.
President Truman arrived in Washington ending a 15 day 8,000 mile rail journey to Los Angeles and back. He told reporters it was educational for him and the country, smiled as he greeted a crowd at Union Terminal, then rode to the White House where 200 employees lined the lawn to welcome him. He faces a congress he has criticized as the worst, or second worst, in history with a stack of 150 bills to tackle.
Pulaski Va June 18 A man calling sheriff Summers of Pulaski county said I want to go to jail He identified as Charles William Burton of Little Rail road He was wanted on five warrants for resisting arrest assault non support and breaking and entering Burton said it gets too cold in the mountains at night after turning himself in.
The United States will reinforce European air defense by moving the 36th wing of jet fighters from the Panama Canal zone to the United States zone of Germany. The transfer, about August 15, doubles Europe’s fighter strength while a small B 29 force arrives in Okinawa for a three month stay. Command will be led by Lt. Gen. Curtis E. Lemay and Col. Henry R. Spicer.
Washington reports a proposed 21 month draft term faced a filibuster led by Senator Taylor of Idaho delaying final action. House approved a one year option with February 1949 earliest inductions, while Senate expected 21 months as parties argued. Taylor vowed to keep Senate in session overnight to force a compromise as Langer and Taft weighed tactics. A 90 day induction plan floated but tentative.
Washington June 18 Senator Glen L Taylor carries on a one man filibuster against the draft bill. He ranges topics from Henry A Wallace and his boomerang hobby to surviving an atomic bomb. The Idaho former singing cowboy and Wallace backer plugs Wallace for president as he rails in a chatty style. Taylor bolted the Democrats last winter for a Wallace third party ticket. He began at 3 37 p m Eastern. A White House message interrupted once with nominations from President Truman. He resumed and spoke to a sparse Senate gallery that grew as word spread.
Washington reports a White House clash in the soft coal fight between John L. Lewis and operators. Truman moves to activate Taft Hartley machinery to halt a potential strike as the current contract expires June 30. The union would be idle June 26 to July 6 under the present terms, delaying any strike.
