Liberty Electa plant closes. Mercer seeks new tenant
Since Liberty Electa shut in September 1981, the Mercer County Development Authority has been seeking an industrial tenant for the vacant Liberty Electa building. Richard Preservati of Princeton, former Liberty Electro president, cited insufficient working capital funding and high interest rates for the closure. Approximately 86 workers remained employed at shutdown. Preservati had purchased the Rockwell International plant in August 1979 and in 1980 announced plans to house an electronics industry in the facility, with actual production starting January 1981. The plant, built in the early 1960s by North American Aviation, once employed over 300 people. The property was sold under a deed of trust from Liberty Electa to Princeton Bank and Trust and the West Virginia Economic Development Authority. As part of the sale, the bank was to place a 10 percent deposit on its bid and pay the remainder of the $1.8 million bid within 30 days. Ira M. Smith and Guy W. Perkins acted as trustees.
