Congress Should Rule On High Sulfur Coal

Former West Virginia Governor Arch Moore urged Congress to set air quality standards for high sulfur coal, arguing EPA rules hurt Ohio and West Virginia economies. He cited a Monongahela Power plant waiver as a preview of possible relief and warned against overreliance on federal agencies. Consol executive William Poundstone backed raising sulfur dioxide limits temporarily for study, saying health impacts are acceptable with adjustments.

Nude paintings return to display at Meredith College

In Raleigh Meredith College restored two nude artworks to view after earlier removal prompted by office staff offended by the pieces. President John Weems approved rehanging a photograph of a woman's breasts and midsection in Johnson Hall and moved the nude painting to the rotunda. The dispute drew protest from the Women's Center of Raleigh, which sponsors the show titled Art Work by Women in Wake County, while officials said actions reflected moral concerns rather than taste alone.
