A freight wreck near Pepper yesterday night after an axle broke derailed three cars and killed flagman Ed Hall. The wreck blocked the line for hours delaying east and west trains. Hall’s body was sent to Christiansburg for burial after preparation at Crockett’s undertaking.
Regent Shirt Co of New York replies to a West Virginia retailer that they have cut the balance of Pongee shirte GSR1805 due on back order and will attempt delivery soon. Exquisite Anglaise wheat pattern embroidery sells for 3.75 a yard with 0.50 bands. Florist items from Fallon Roanoke advertise roses coleus and other plants.
In Coventry Connecticut a farm well was found frozen to a depth of thirty feet in June. A reporter verified the claim by inspecting the unused well where a solid ice column extended to the bottom, a phenomenon unseen in years.
In Cleveland on June 16 the American Association of General Baggage Agents outlined plans to reform baggage rules across railroads. A system would allow checking luggage from passenger homes to final hotel destinations, and an insurance tariff for baggage over a fixed value, likely $100, offering insurance equal to half the excess charge per hundred pounds per each $100 of coverage.
A jur y in Bristol Virginia failed to reach a verdict in the damage suit of Nettie Stegall administrator against Norfolk and Western Railway. The case seeks about 10 000 dollars for the death of Henry Stegall who was struck by a switch engine in local railway yards.
Southern Railway passenger train No 40 northbound derailed one mile north of Kings Mountain last night. Engineer Charles Cauble of Greenville NC was badly scalded but to recover. Fireman Bob Witherspoon of Greenville is missing and feared buried under the engine. The engine and mail baggage car left the track.
Wytheville Virginia voters backed the dry option in the local election held yesterday with a 26 vote margin. The result makes Wytheville one of the communities in the area to establish a liquor prohibition locally.

Forty seven years after two men were hanged for his supposed murder William R Brothers died at his Nansemond county home of natural causes aged 76. He survived a brutal 1858 assault in which a chopped arm and crushed ribs left him near death before vigilantes hanged two accused slaves Jim and Harvey. The third assailant escaped after two days of pursuit. Brothers recovered after months of suffering.
Vienna reports a traveling show in Derekgyhaz Hun gary staged a cannibal act that required an audience volunteer. A peasant boy became the victim and was bitten causing three deaths and many injuries. The cannibal fled as police search for him after a riot ensued.
On July 22 at 3 pm the capture was noted and the association moved to admit charter members who joined by July 22 with a 3 dollar initiation and dues paid to Jan 1, 1906. Others pay 5 dollar admission and annual dues.
The remains of Fred Barlow will be taken to Roanoke this morning on train No.4. The family and a delegation from the local order of Elke will accompany the remains. Sunday afternoon the funeral service will be held at the home of the deceased mother at one o'clock under the auspices of the Elke. Interment will follow at Fairview cemetery.

Civil and consulting engineers gathered at Henry Mace Payne’s office in Williamson on June 10 to organize a local body. The group adopted the name Appalachian Engineering Association and elected officers F W Calloway president Joseph F Kent vice president Henry M Payne secretary N H Monnakee treasurer. A committee was named to draft a constitution and by laws for next meeting at Dr Payne’s office.

A well known Wyoming lawyer was killed and the suspect has been a fugitive for six months. The case centers on the man who killed the attorney and his ongoing fugitive status.
Ken Canterbury who shot and killed Attorney Christian in Wyoming County six months ago was arrested in Ashland Kentucky and will be returned to Wyoming County for trial. He had been at large, traveling widely, and kept in touch with home during his flight. He may face Judge Miller when the next circuit term opens.
The Daily Telegraph lauds the Bluefield Choral Society amateur production of Pinafore at the Elke Opera House as a musical ecstasy and more creditable than any visiting troupe. Wheeling West Virginia June 16 By Judge Hugus the city artificial gas plant is to be crushed out of existence. An ordinance bans natural gas sales for illuminating purposes and the provision is ruled unconstitutional. The ruling concerns franchise grants and the city police court fines for burning gas for light. The city will appeal to the Supreme Court. an adverse ruling would end the gas plant.
