GM and UAW sign quality network pact to boost car standards
General Motors and United Auto Workers officials signed a Quality Network agreement aimed at raising product quality across GM plants in the United States. The pact allows workers enhanced input in design, engineering, and subcontracting decisions and ties possible bonuses to quality improvements, with about six full-time UAW members working with GM on major divisions. The accord, separate from summer contract talks, could broaden participation and help counter slumping sales, as GM cites world class quality as key to survival. The package was announced as GM recalled 1.1 million 1983 84 compact J cars and 108,000 1985 86 Spectrum cars for faults.
