Indian Coal Leases Voided By Federal Judge in Billings
U.S. District Judge James Battin in Billings ordered Interior Department to rescind at least six Powder River Basin coal leases affecting four companies after finding inadequate environmental impact review. The 1982 Powder River lease sale involved 370 million tons in Montana and a broader 1.6 billion tons across Montana and Wyoming. The ruling concerns Cheyenne reservations and leaves Wyoming leases uncertain.
