Virginia Court Upholds Death Sentences in Two Virginia Murders

The Virginia Supreme Court ruled Johnny Watkins Jr. and Richard T. Boggs were properly sentenced to die for the killings of two Danville clerks and an 87 year old Portsmouth woman. Separate opinions rejected defenses that police statements were improper evidence. Boggs had been linked to the Shaw case after a 1964 murder and robbery when articles stolen from Mrs. Shaw were found in his car during a routine inventory. Watkins was convicted for the deaths of Betty Jean Barker and Carl Buchanan after robberies yielding 124.62 dollars.
