First annual Poke Salad Bluegrass and Country Fest held in coal town Boissevain Virginia. festival showcased local music and community spirit with emphasis on regional heritage and culture.
In Southfield Michigan a two year old fell 90 feet from a ninth floor window landing on a bush that snagged his diaper and stripped him naked but saved his life. Joshua Beatty suffered a forehead scratch and remained in pediatric ICU overnight for observation. Apartment staff called it a miraculous catch by the bush.
On Wednesday June 17 a Red Cross Bloodmobile visits the GTE building Bluefield from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. On Friday June 19 the Bluefield Antique Festival runs 6 to 9 p.m. at the Bluefield Recreation Center and Auditorium with gates open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday June 20 and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday June 21. On Tuesday June 23 a Red Cross Bloodmobile visits Gethsemane Baptist Church Richlands from noon to 6 p.m. A more complete calendar is on page A-2.
National Weather Service forecasts a 60 percent chance of showers or thunderstorms today with southeast winds of 5 to 10 mph and highs in the lower 70s. Tonight clouds persist with a 40 percent chance of more showers and overnight lows in the upper 50s.
Tazewell County boards restored funding for six of thirteen proposed cuts after a long public hearing that drew nearly 500 residents. Revisions to the budget will endure with six programs funded including Prenatal Project and 4 H, while several groups and items remain unfunded or questioned.
A Buchanan County man 22 Shannon Musick of Rowe died at Russell County Medical Center after a 5 30 p m Saturday one vehicle crash on Route 80 near Council alcohol was involved and two other men aged 19 from Vansant and Davenport were injured airlifted to Holston Valley and transported to RCMC respectively. In a separate Dickenson County crash 17 year old Dama Renee Dotson of Clintwood died after her 1980 Chevrolet Chevette ran off Route 601 and overturned in a creek she was not belted and the crash occurred Friday night.
Charleston AP reports two women organizations question Gov. Gaston Caperton's push for inclusion of women and minorities. Critics point to a 1991 stats mix showing 44.6 percent women and 3.1 percent black employees, with cabinet-level leaders all male except one Black official, prompting calls for broader job opportunities.
At the Rio Earth Summit Japan vows 7 to 7.7 billion dollars in environmental aid to developing countries and to cut carbon emissions. Leaders including Francois Mitterrand pledge higher development aid targets as delegates work toward non binding documents and a global warming treaty.
President Bush stated after the Earth Summit that the battering the United States took will not deter him from running again as an environmentalist. He asserted leadership over critics and acknowledged anxiety about the election while denying it affects environmental policy. The U S faces criticism for resisting a major biodiversity treaty and watering down a global warming agreement.
Roderick Neal 26 of Bluefield was appointed by Circuit Court Judges John Frazier and David Knight as Mercer County Probation Department officer. A EKU 1991 graduate with sociology and business degrees, Neal returned home to face a bleak job outlook but remained determined to find local work. He began May 26 handling pre sentence investigations, supervision, and programs from home confinement to mental health referrals while aiming for graduate school and law school.
