Bluefield voters will name 10 candidates from 22 contenders for the city board in a high turn out primary on July 5. Polls open 6 30 a m to 7 30 p m at 15 precincts with two charter amendments on the ballot including a May June shift and a $25 filing fee for candidates.
Oakvale residents pressed their bid for an injunction to stop Mercer County Board of Education from bussing grades seven through 12 to Princeton. The case, before Chief Judge Howard M. Jarrett, features 18 witnesses including board members and a Morgantown priest, amid consolidation debates and fiscal concerns.
Bluefield Virginia Side Council moved to hire Gene F. Moore former Manassas Park city manager at 20000 dollars annually including expenses. Moore, 40 and an Ash-ville NC native with a Nebraska BS, currently has other offers but will be contacted today about the post. Mayor Jimmy Jones says 200 plus applications were received for the position.
Northfork G C Murphy store manager John B. Scaggs surveys the smoke damaged building after a Sunday morning blaze. Investigators point to an electrical cause in the apartment above the shop, with damage exceeding 150000 dollars. Mayor Shanks predicts a quick rebuild and reopening.
The U S Department of Housing and Urban Development approves a 991000 block grant plus 27000 urban renewal funds for Bluefield totaling 1018346. Bruce Gerwig says Year III funds will cover street work drainage beautification recreation equipment and a housing rehab loan program with environmental reviews to precede releases possibly by August or September and work starting next spring. The Bland Street area and adjacent streets are listed for a 140000 allocation.
