Virginia statewide blackout issued by Governor Darden for June 17 1942 from 9 30 p m to 4 am June 18 1942. Air raid alarm to sound about thirty minutes with a long two minute horn blast. Residents urged to dim or extinguish lights and stay off streets unless on official duty.
Co. M. Fisher, pastor, leads Sunday services with 9:45 a.m. church school and 11 a.m. worship centered on The Cure for Trouble. Evening service at 8 p.m. includes Rally Day program and Vacation school group activities. Adult choir performs and youth fellowship gathers at 7 p.m. Wednesday prayer meeting at 8 p.m. Studies include Acts 22. Reports from Narrows district conference given by Mrs. Crawford Peters and Fisher. Adult choir rehearsal Friday at 7:15 p.m.
About 280 registered voters were eligible and 123 ballots were cast in Tuesday's town election. L. B. Crawford was returned as mayor and the council members elected were J. K. Peters B. T. Graham Junius W. Ellett John S. Dennen George W. Butt W. F. Shumate W. B. Heldreth and M. B. Hammitt.
A sequence of birth notices lists a girl born to Mr. and Mrs Filbert Thomas on June 3, a boy for Mr. and Mrs Samuel H. Poin dexter on June 4, a girl named Elizabeth Jane for Mr. and Mrs Lyle Chrigley on June 6, and a son for Mr. and Mrs Dewey Dawson on June 10.
June 25 designated for a neighborhood picnic to be held at the Christy farm in Abbs Valley with activities and community gathering planned.
O E S Princess Pocahontas chapter met at the Masonic hall with Mrs J G McNulty presiding. They set a grand visitation for July 13 and scheduled a call practice for June 22. A home nursing class with Miss Edna Hughes as instructor completed with 35 members finishing the course.
At the close of the class Miss Hughes received a gift of appreciation from graduates. Ruth Jean Curtis left for Los Angeles to visit her mother. Pearl Fisher returns to Emory and Henry College for the summer session. Howard Odom has returned to the U S Navy hospital at Bethesda after visiting family. The Falls family visits Wytheville and travels to Washington D C. Various others prepare trips to Richmond, Pho enixville and Lynchburg. Enlistee Joe Turley III and Pvt Alex Erelyi are noted. Edna Hughes attends the tenth annual Episcopal church youth conference at Hollins College.
Falls Mills Virginia reports the Ladies Missionary society meeting at Mrs Vester with Bluewell society guests. Elton Dennis to preach Christian church services. Falls Mills nursing class to award certificates at a picnic on June 24 with many named honorees.
The Home Demonstration club met last Tuesday afternoon with Miss Ryburn leading a whole wheat bread demonstration by Mrs. John French. Attendees included Mrs. J. C. Staples Mrs. R. J. Harry Mrs. L. D. Bailey Mrs. Bertha Trent Mrs. Henry Hill Mrs. McPeak Mrs. Buster Jones and Mrs Beeenesy. The hostess served fruit.
Mrs. L D Bailey traveled to Beckley last weekend after the death of her brother in law Raymond Adams who was killed in the Eccles mines. Burial took place at Sunset Memorial cemetery in Beckley. Mrs Adams was formerly Elizabeth Lucas.
Mr and Mrs Howard Peake and their young son visited Mrs Alice Hall the erandmother. They had been living in Alabama and are now located in Radford Virginia.
Miss Louise Baker visits cousin June Baker in Middlesboro Kentucky. Ruth Stallard at Bluefield sanitarium after appendectomy on Wednesday. Dupey Wagener of Decatur Georgia plans a month stay with parents. Mr and Mrs C Magne J Po Mitchem and Ray Shra dey visit friends at East Surf West Virginia. A proverb notes that a living wage belongs to the husband but is earned by the wife.
Local Board 1 chaired by I. T. Jessee announced the fifth selective service registration set for June 30 for all males 18 to 20. Registration will occur at ten designated sites from 7 am to 9 pm, amid broader efforts to boost inductions and reclassifications under revised rules.

Ardmore Oklahoma. For 40 years the parrot of Mrs. J B Hargrave who cared for her invalid husband in Central America aided in a rescue when Hargrave fell from her chair and cried for help. The parrot’s loud calls brought neighbors to fetch aid and save her.

A new Boy Scout troop was organized at a church basement meeting Friday night. Harry Walker was chosen as scoutmaster. A large turnout of boys attended the first meeting.
The Baldwin P T A collected canning sugar requests from the West Virginia side last week with 150 families applying. Helpers listed include Mrs Claude Ireson and Mrs.
The U S O drive opens in Amonate with McDowell county pledging thirty thousand dollars as Amonate Pocahontas Fuel employees donate fully. Mrs W C Jackson and Miss Mabel Brothers hosted a shower for Mrs R B Brotherton with games gifts and a party plate for many attendees including Mrs C S Davis and Miss Alpha Handley.
Harry Dyens of Eckman spent the past weekend with friends. Mrs Louis Roncaglione and daughters Virginia and Lillian left Wednesday for St. Louis. Virginia plans summer study at a school of music there. Mrs Roncaglione and Lillian will return late next week. Mrs W L Lowman and children Evelyn and Frank visit relatives in Duhling. Mrs Lawrence Warf visits relatives in St Paul Virginia. Miss Maxie Crockett of Cane Brake returns from Fresno and Oakland California and plans a West Coast return. John Crockett and daughters Ruth and Billie of Cane Brake and Pat Blevins of Amonate were in Bluefield Saturday.
Engineers and geologists failed to locate water near the municipal airport in Hays Kansas. Pioneer citizen Sam Groff used a forked stick to find a water source. He guided crews to dig and struck an apparently inexhaustible water supply, confirmed by airport manager Don Pratt.
One of the worst rains in recent years hit Tip Top on Friday afternoon. J M Cunningham lost most of his garden to the flood and many other gardens were heavily washed. The Tip Top Batley road was blocked for an hour due to several stalled cars with drowned motors. Water reached up to three feet in spots. Farmers call it among the worst rainstorms in the area.
George H. Bowman, a well known local youth, recently enlisted in the Naval Reserve on May 29 and is stationed in Norfolk for three weeks of aviator mechanic training after several months in Charleston, West Virginia.
Mr and Mrs Walter Mathena and son Eddie visited Pageton West Virginia on Monday. Mr and Mrs Harold Cunningham spent several days this week visiting relatives in Richlands. Mrs Martha Poole has been visiting relatives in North Taze Well for several days.
