Piniella Criticizes Devil Rays Ownership Over Win Focus

Pittsburgh AP Lou Piniella, exhausted by slump losses, blasted the Devil Rays owners for not prioritizing winning now. He faulted New York based owners who bought a 48 percent stake for caring about the future while Tampa Bay struggles on the field. The Rays trailed 18-2 to the Pirates as they allowed 10 or more runs for the sixth time since May 29, with a 20-42 record. He refused to take responsibility, urging the new owners to explain the club’s woes.
