Witnesses Testify Austria Threats A World War Pressured Schuschnigg
In Nurenberg on June 12 1946 witnesses testified that Hitler allies in Austria threatened Chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg with another world war unless Austria joined Germany. Edmond von Glaise Horstenau described how Seyss Inquart planned the move and how Berlin urged immediate seizure of power. Schuschnigg delayed a plebiscite but Berlin insisted and troops moved in. Schuschnigg was jailed seven years. Seyss Inquart later led Nazi rule in the Netherlands and helped confiscate royal assets.
