Virginia state employees may get a 4.8 percent pay hike

Governor Mills Godwin said revenue improvement makes prospects bright for a 4.8 percent raise for state workers. He expects a firm decision on a $33.6 million salary boost before the new fiscal year begins July 1, with pay reflected in the July 15 paycheck. He cited tax collections as key revenue drivers and noted past budget actions helped avoid a larger deficit.

Dog Shooting Brings $50 Fine

A Bluefield man, William Oliver of Grassy Branch, was fined $50 and costs in magistrate court for shooting a doberman owned by Robert Hampton. Oliver said the dog tore clothes from a clothes line. Mercer County Humane Society provided legal services. eighth favorable animal case noted.
