Bear Bites Man At Virginia Park Camping Ground
Robert Kaplan of The Bronx aged 20 was bitten on the ankle by a black bear while in a sleeping bag at Mathews Arm campground in Shenandoah National Park. He was treated at Warren Memorial Hospital in Front Royal and released. Ranger Angus Ross said the bear roamed camps early Thursday, likely attracted by food odors. A trap for bears in the campground area was damaged four days earlier.

Virginia health officials report 154 drownings in 1969 making it the fourth leading cause of accidental death. Water transport accidents added 47 deaths. Recreational water deaths totaled 176 with a 3.7 per 100000 rate. teens accounted for 39 percent and males outnumbered females nine to one.
