Banks across the nation lifted the prime lending rate to 8 percent from 7 percent. The jump alarms large borrowers while some banks say smaller customers won’t feel the rise. Rep Wright Patman urged antitrust action to curb big banks.
Washington reports May job growth slowed while unemployment held steady. Total employment rose to 77.3 million, up 200,000 from April, signaling easing of growth in line with Nixon administration inflation controls. Hourly earnings reach $3.02 for about 45 million workers. unemployment falls to 2.3 million but jobless rate stays at 3.5 percent.
A legislative subcommittee in Charleston voted to seek inclusion of absentee voting law revision on the West Virginia special session agenda. The motion directs the parent joint committee on government and finance to request Gov Arch Moore Jr. add the subject. The parent committee meets Tuesday as Moore prepares the July 21 start date for the session.
In New Orleans AP reports Rev. Dr. Wayne E Ward a Southern Baptist Theological Seminary professor told 5 000 pastors that Pope Paul s 1968 encyclical banning artificial contraception contradicts Holy Scripture He warns the birth control debate could free individuals from tradition and church authority to make moral choices.
A congressman report says the Army ignores a warning of a $150 million higher cost than an improved existing vehicle. The General Accounting Office tentatively says the new truck may be an excessive expenditure for marginal combat gains.
Hollywood AP reports Gov. Ronald Reagan will deliver the funeral eulogy for Robert Taylor at Forest Lawn Cemetery Glendale. Taylor, 57, a film star for 35 years, died after a battle with lung cancer. The services are scheduled for Wednesday.
The Senate voted 74 to 3 to confirm Warren Earl Burger as chief justice, despite liberal opposition and a delaying motion. Burger, 61, would take the post after Abe Fortas resigns, with Nixon pledging rapid action to fill that vacancy.

Gov Arch Moore announced IRS approval that the securities exchanged for 133 million in Turnpike bonds will be tax exempt for bondholders.
