Senate Foreign Relations chair Vandenberg denounces House reductions in foreign aid as cynical and damaging to the European recovery program. He urges restoring funding to sustain the Marshall plan, while clashing with GOP leaders Taber and other key officials amid a party rift.
Washington June 9 11 Democrats on the house banking committee voted to block the Walcott housing bill and push the Taft Ebender Wagner plan. The T E W bill would back 15 million homes in 15 years with 500000 low cost units owned by public agencies and slum clearance subsidies.
Twelve men will be arraigned in Preston county circuit court on indictments from the Hartman Coal non union mine disturbance during the soft coal miners walk out. Raymond Hartman owner and A B Titchenell employee were injured when roving pickets visited the mine. Joe Angelo of Fairmont faces conspiracy to inflict punishment and bodily injury and carrying a concealed weapon. Joseph Buarfo of Monongalia county will face conspiracy and theft charges for taking a 20 gauge shotgun from Hartman’s ear.
The United Nations asked the United States France and Belgium to provide six coastal patrol vessels and 63 military observers to monitor the four week armistice in Palestine. Lie announced negotiations with the three governments for three American ships two French and one Belgian. Sweden contributes five observers aiding Bernadotte who will establish control from Rhodes.
New York on June 9 reports a heavy trading day with the stock market closing at its highest level since August 1946. Gains ranged from a few cents to about $1, with blocks of 1,000 shares frequent on the ticker. Some issues hit the years’ highs or higher despite modest declines in a few cases. The rise followed hopes of an upward trend with John L Lewis offering to keep miners at work if the 1947 welfare fund is funded.
At Pearl Harbor the navy discussed plans to use the battleships New York and Nevada as target ships in July for feet target practice. Confirmation or denial of the Honolulu Advertiser report was not given. Task Force 38 will operate in Hawaiian waters in July with Iowa Boxer Princeton and cruisers Springfield Astoria Pasadena.
Cairo June 9 AP Count Folke Bernadotte announced a four week armistice in Palestine to start at 1 am EST Friday with a peace conference to end bloodshed. Arabs and Jews accepted UN truce terms unconditionally and observers will supervise. Rhodes will host the talks. Trans Jordan ordered ceasefire at once. fighting continued in Jerusalem with shelling and armored attacks reported.
Washington June 9 The House approved and sent to the Senate a 5.795 billion dollar appropriation bill funding the atomic energy commission the veterans administration and other agencies while abolishing the war assets administration The measure reflects cuts ordered by the appropriations committee removing about 504.57 million from Truman requests It includes allocations for the atomic energy commission the VA the Maritime Commission and the Office of Housing Expediter plus a plan to wind down the War Assets Administration by August 31 and transfer unsold inventories to the air forces federal supply and other entities. It also bars using VA funds for GI bill hobby courses such as dancing and pleasure flying.
Washington June 9 Eugene Meyer board chairman of the Washington Post accepted chairmanship of a finance committee to raise funds for an inquiry into the slaying of George Polk. Polk was an American news correspondent found slain in Greece under mysterious circumstances.
The GOP convention in Philadelphia will feature a record daily entertainment spend of 52000 dollars as officials report 18,000 attendees and about 5,000 hotel rooms. Arrangements call for platform adoption on day three with presidential nominations that night, while Independence Hall bans a patriotic rally. Mayor Bernard Samuel and Governor James Duff will welcome delegates.
At least three and possibly eight persons were killed yesterday in a plane crash in Chiapas state Mexico. Three bodies were taken to Tuxtla Gutierrez and reports indicate all six passengers and two pilots were killed. A severe storm isolated Tuxtla Gutierrez, and information is limited. All aboard were believed to be Mexicans.
Jackson Mississippi June 9 The states rights Democrats launched a drive to organize the South against President Truman and his civil rights program. Headquarters opened to gain full southern support for states rights candidates if nominated. Campaign Director Oliver Emmerich said a Birmingham Alabama conference would be called if Truman is nominated. Emmerich noted the work runs through the Philadelphia convention to Birmingham and decisions depend on the Birmingham meeting. The committee planned to issue demands at the convention and, if unmet, would convene in Birmingham on July 17 to propose their own candidates. Nebraska Democratic Chairman William Ritchie said he would sit in on pre convention caucus and oppose Truman at the convention.
Prague reports the national coalition front selected Klement Gottwald as Czechoslovakia's next president and Antonin Zapotocky as the next premier. Ratification by Parliament is expected next Monday to complete the succession after Eduard Benes resigned rather than sign the communist drafted constitution. The front, dominated by communists, is said to have restricted leadership picks and purge actions within its ranks.
Memphis Tenn June Pete Waldron, new to fishing, borrowed a boat, hook, and line and reeled in a 43-pound catfish for his first catch, turning a novice outing into a local triumph.
In Richmond the Dewey campaign mingled with Virginia Democrats during a reception and luncheon. Governor Byrd allies and state officials, including Jesse Dillon and Henry Gilmer, exchanged greetings as Dewey joked with the group. A doorman kept Democrats from the inner room.
Boston on June 9 Rabbi Joshua Loth Liebman aged 41, author of the best seller Peace of Mind, died at his home today after a bout with grippe. He had been ill for some time, and his death follows a period of Democrats dissents and a Sunday morning sbid. He suffered a heart attack this afternoon.
Washington reports John L. Lewis and coal operators exchanged peace plans to avert a nationwide mine strike in July. The UMW plan sought a $100 monthly pension for older miners and a contract extension with conditions, while operators offered a capped pension, a welfare fund split, and no pay raise. Talks aim to extend the existing contract past June 30 as government measures loom.
Paris June 9 Gen Charles de Gaulle blasted the six power London agreement to form a separate Western German government saying it would pave the way for Russian domination of all Germany. He warned of two rival Germanys and noted the French foreign affairs committee approved the accord by 22 to 21 with reservations.

President Truman denounced the current Congress as the worst in history during speeches in Spokane Washington. He urged labor union members to oppose Taft-Hartley and warned the remedy was the 1948 election. He also criticized The Spokesman Review and Chicago Tribune as worst in the United States, amid remarks atop Grand Coulee Dam. He accused the press of bias and attacked the Taft-Hartley law before addressing the Independent Communications Workers of America.
Spokane dispatch reports a chef from President Truman's special train ran out of butter and jumped a taxi for 90 miles to catch the train. Cab driver Cal Hire picked up the chef and the butter, moved toward Ephrata where the train waited during a Grand Coulee dam inspection.
The Senate agreed to a 2 PM vote on the draft bill for men aged 19 to 25 after approving a court martial reform amendment. It rejected four amendments including segregation by race and delaying the draft. Senate leaders expect passage before June 19, though House prospects look dim.
Oak Ridge Tenn June 9 Company and union officials entered their third negotiations session aiming to settle the labor dispute at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Progress is being made, said Clark Center general manager for Carbide and Carbon Chemicals Corp. The government has not received orders to dissolve the 80 day injunction, which expired at midnight Monday. About 500 union members authorized leaders to strike and opposed reconfirmation of ABC members including David Lillenthal for his support of contractor interests.
