Floods and Slides Block Richlands Area Roads

Heavy rains caused floods along Clinch river and Indian creek. A Norfolk and Western rail line between Richlands and Indian was blocked by multiple slides with larger ones needing hours to clear. A bridge on Route 84 near Banes Mill shifted from its foundation and traffic was diverted via Wardell. Many homes along Big and Indian creeks were flooded as families evacuated to higher ground.

Lad Drowns At Bluestone

An 8 year old boy, Jigas Warfe of Poca Hontas, drowned while swimming near the Bluestone Junction under a Norfolk and Western tower. He fell from a log as it tipped, body recovered within five minutes, revival efforts failed. Parents, neighbors, and station WHIS aided, family newcomer to Tazewell County.
