The Bluefield city board disclosed election costs of about 2500 dollars for the municipal primary, with only 1,828 of more than 11,000 voters participating to nominate ten city board candidates. Registrars and election workers were paid, and building permits were also reviewed at the session.
Huntington West Virginia June 9 in a large Ohio Valley Conservation and Flood Control congress meeting the group adopted a resolution urging Congress in Washington to speed the Bluestone dam project on the New River near Hinton. The resolution called for funds and a construction contract within 30 days. The assembly praised engineers and welcomed Lieut Col J F Conklin departing for Panama and Lieut Col J D Arthur arriving from Zanesville Ohio.
Burke McClanahan 31 editorial writer for the Charleston Daily Mail and active in state Republican circles died in hospital after two months of illness. Stricken with paralysis last week his condition grew critical. Blood transfusions and oxygen were given but he did not rally. He was a son of the late P. M. and Mrs. Lanahan and had lived in Charleston about 25 years, previously from Stamford Connecticut. Survivors include sister Mrs. McClanahan Davis and brother Preston McClanahan.
New York June 9 Morgan opposes tax dodging or evasion and says his remarks about taxation were misinterpreted. From his Long Island summer home he defends current laws and urges lawmakers to fix tax rules, arguing taxpayers must not be insulted and that Congress should know how to levy taxes.
Charleston June 9 Department heads and the board of control prepared for the next fiscal year by itemizing budgets for Budget Director H Isaiah Smith. Officials note only 1 166 000 remains to be paid this month from a 21 278 000 general fund with June revenues expected to balance the books for the second time since 1928 possibly with 500 000 to the good. Smith urged department heads to return budgets by June 10 for careful review and budget discipline. The board of public works will consider recommendations before June. the general fund estimate is seen as a sign some items may be pared. The 1935 legislature appropriated 21 278 000 for state services this year. Public assistance has 286 000 due for work already started. 3 000 000 was allocated to counties for direct relief. Schools have 10 500 000 earmarked, plus 1 000 000 from the equalization fund. The 1937 legislature granted the department a deficiency appropriation of 1 278 000. only 898 000 remains to be transferred.
East Prussia June 9 Adolf Hitler will address 600 trusted followers on June 19 at Marienburg castle near the Polish frontier. The setting mirrors Nazi aims and Teutonic history as Danzig’s fate looms amid League of Nations tension. Poland warns against any annexation despite a ten year non aggression pact.
Los Angeles June 9 The William Desmond Taylor murder inquiry again yields no arrest. County grand jury may indict at least two persons, says District Attorney Barent Fitts, though no action is imminent. Taylor, a film director, was shot dead in his apartment February 1.
In Fairmont West Virginia on June 9 George Larue 19 Morgan Mines shot himself in the head with a rifle and drove his car over an embankment after telling family a 17 year old high school girl spurned his marriage proposal. He had bought a license that day and left a note saying With love George. A car driven by Robert Jaco 23 near Montgomery approached as Larue sped away crashing the vehicle before being taken to a hospital and later dying from his injuries. Coroner Guy Utterback said no inquest would be held.
Hollywood bids farewell to Jean Harlow with a 20 minute funeral at a Glendale chapel. A flower covered coffin rests in a receiving vault while 250 guests including William Powell Clark Gable Spencer Tracy Myrna Loy and Maureen O Sullivan share mournful tributes and memories.
Nearly half a million residents in the Saginaw valley regain electric service after Consumers Power Co workers in Flint Saginaw and Bay City vote 88 to 27 to accept a Washington backed agreement. Governor Murphy warned of state action to end the disruption and Adjutant General Bersey stood ready as the union head urged acceptance. Current flows resumed around 5 30 p m restoring power to many who faced spoilage and outage across 13 counties. General Motors plants in the area were closed and payroll losses tallied at 454 000 for 24 hours.
Michigan City June 9 three former Ohio convicts face execution in Indiana’s electric chair for the head and hands slaying of Harry R. Miller a Cincinnati fire captain to gain a $150 000 fortune. Williams Kuhlman and Poholsky plead guilty Hicks appeals and awaits state supreme court ruling while the others resigned to their fate with no visitors.
Monroe Mich June 9 Mediation delayed reopening of the Newton Steel mill after 150 police mobilized to break a CIO picket line. Company and workers will meet in Lansing with Governor Murphy to seek a peaceful settlement. reopening postponed to 4 pm tomorrow.
Washington June 9 Senate member Copeland urged a sweeping inquiry into labor troubles in all industries, with focus on steel and shipping. He cited the railroad labor act as a model for mediation and possible arbitration, noting a 60 day cooling period after an investigatory board is formed. Bridges also sought public hearings on alleged mail interference by the post office at strike sites.
The West Virginia Supreme Court ruled the state may deny beer distributor licenses to those who have not resided in the state for four years before applying. Joseph Hinebaugh of Maryland challenged the law’s constitutionality, arguing it violated citizenship rights. The act, effective April 15, aims to regulate sale and distribution, with the court noting policing powers and nationwide applicability. A formal opinion will follow.
London reports Britain sent a formal protest to Generalissimo Franco accusing the insurgent regime of mine laying near Almeria that damaged the fish destroyer Hunter on May 13, with eight British sailors lost. The note says the strike was likely from mines laid by the insurgents and reiterates that Britain had not granted belligerent rights.
Unofficial returns show Georgia voters defeated a repeal of the 22 year old prohibition law by 8,277, with 102,828 against repeal and 94,652 for repeal. Separate elections approved 26 constitutional amendments backed by Gov. Eugene Talmadge.
A tornado six miles east of Union City killed Fannie Thornton a farm woman and demolished at least seven farm homes. The severed area was Oklahoma City on June 9.
Ohio and Michigan governors move to calm a deadly strike at Republic Steel in Youngstown and Monroe. Murphy calls a joint conference with union leaders and company reps to delay reopening. Davey warns of riot risk and invites CLC chiefs to meet, while Republic and Sheet and Tube chairmen pledge to bargain.
