Fire Violations May Close 26 Mercer Schools
Mercer County Board of Education heard that 26 of its 39 schools may be closed next year if state fire marshal violations are not fixed. Superintendent Clinton D. Lilly said the four hour meeting with State Fire Marshal Walter Smittle III revealed major safety deficiencies in more than half the district schools.

Voters Decide On Fairview Construction Of PJHS Bond Issue

Carter Hopes To Hold Prices Down With Foreign Beef
President Carter announces plans to curb inflation by importing lean foreign beef at about five cents lower per pound, saving consumers an estimated $500 million this year. Three Vehicle Crash Injures Seven Near Bluewell
Seven people were injured in a late Thursday crash on U S Rt 52 south of Bluewell. Drivers Oscar Frank Pais Jr Vickie Lester Dillow and Thomas Thompson all from Bluefield were hospitalized with varying injuries while passengers Betty M Pais Corrine William M Dillon Jeane Faye Sweder and Bee Albert Williams, all Mercer County residents, sustained injuries. Deputy Rick Lambert said a 1973 Pais pickup and a 1971 Thompson Mercury were southbound when the 1972 Dillon Chevrolet northbound car crossed into the wrong lane, striking Thompson’s vehicle.
