Caesars claims Whittaker wrote bad checks in 2004

Atlantic City casino Caesars, owned by Harrah's, sues Powerball winner Jack Whittaker claiming he wrote 21 checks totaling 1.5 million that bounced during gambling trips in 2004. Whittaker says he owes nothing due to agreements with the casino. The suit was filed in May 2005 and surfaced via a West Virginia subpoena in an unrelated wrongful death case.

Bluefield drugs guns cash seized in Bluewell raid

State police seized 22772 in cash and drugs at a Bluewell residence after executing a search warrant. Officers recovered 241 Oxycontin tablets along with hydrocodone, percocets, oxycodone and marijuana. Two handguns a rifle and two shotguns were also recovered and two men were arrested on distribution charges.

TAZEWELL Va The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality issued a notice of violation to Tazewell County over asbestos and unpermitted municipal waste found at the county landfill. Officials say the asbestos dates from the late 1980s and more waste from the early 1990s was uncovered, with potential daily fines until cleanup. County leaders emphasize cooperation with the DEQ as they work toward remediation.

Senate fails to approve gay marriage ban by wide margin

In Washington the Senate rejected a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage by 49 to 48 to limit debate, 11 votes short of the 60 needed, dashing the measure for this year. President Bush said the issue may return. Democrats blamed conservative politics as Republicans faced the litmus test.
