Rep Rick Boucher was renominated by acclamation at a Democratic rally in Coeburn held Saturday. If Republicans fail to field a candidate, Boucher would become the first Virginia Ninth District candidate to run uncontested since 1853.

Presidential investigators pressed NASA to build full scale versions of a redesigned booster rocket tested upright, a costly step that could delay shuttle flights beyond next summer. The panel, final report due Monday, says the July 28 Challenger explosion stemmed from a faulty booster seam. Names not released.
The presidential space shuttle commission and experts say the final Challenger disaster report omits key criticisms before its official delivery to President Reagan. Notable omissions include recommendations on limiting shuttle crew sizes.

Polls show Waldheim slight favorite among 5.4 million eligible voters after a four way May 4 ballot.
Earl Yeager, sheriff of McDowell County, and Emily Yeager, Welch city council member, share a long political lineage. The couple, married since 1971, hail from public service roots through Emily’s father, the late Roy Warden, a former state legislator. Yeager, who began in politics about 35 years ago, has held roles as a math teacher, football coach, Navy gunnery officer, and trooper before becoming sheriff in 1983. He notes his age has not hindered his work, starting at 8 a.m. and sometimes working late into the night.

Sheltoney owns a past of selling tents and a six figure income before addiction and recovery, while his Lit tle Chapel in Ceres pastorate supports food banks and community outreach. He emphasizes little dress code rules and allows congregants to testify, while the tent’s setup includes grass scented air and a temporary footbridge over soggy ground.
