Mercer County Board Race Ends MCSPA Ambition Talk

Harold Brewster of Bluefield and Ben Faulkner of Princeton won in the Mercer County Board of Education race on Tuesday. Their defeats of Lackey backed candidates, Maureen Brown and Dick Harrison, ended MCSPA hopes of controlling the five member board. Brown and Harrison finished seventh and eighth as the ninth candidate withdrew. The outcome favors a cooperative approach for the new board, with Brewster and Faulkner signaling openness to Lackey's guidance before taking office on January 1, 1981.

China Eyes Modernization Pace By 2000

AP reports China’s drive for modernization with billboards and slogans urging sacrifice. Deng Xiaoping cautions that reaching a $1,000 per capita income by 2000 is possible but would label China only moderately well-off like Japan or West Germany in the 1950s. Observers cite urban growth as the likeliest success area while noting current salaries average about $433 annually.
