Hatfield and McCoy Trail expansion eyed for McDowell Mercer counties

Hatfield and McCoy Recreation Trail aims to extend beyond 500 miles drawing thousands to southern West Virginia. Executive Director Matthew Ballard says Lincoln and McDowell counties near completion with 35,000 acres signed for 100 miles. If landowners cooperate, McDowell could open by 2005 and Mercer by 2006 or later, with riders spending 250 dollars plus in local businesses. The system reports strong safety enforcement and no fatalities since 2000. Further details at trailsheaven.com.
