Mercer Memories of Athens School and Local Growth
In the late 1860s Athens saw growth as families like the Fannings and Vermillions hosted visitors. A saloon near Concord United Methodist Church sparked revivalist opposition. legend says lightning caused a fire. The era also saw the 1871 founding of the Masonic Lodge and the Athens Chapter of the Eastern Star in 1908. Concord State Normal School opened May 10, 1875 with Capt. James Harvey French as first principal, later moving to a brick building in 1886 and expanding in 1889. Local land deeds and funding by prominent families enabled construction on a six acre plot, with the school site now at the JEFF HARVEY COLUMNIST location.
