Simulated coal mine ride opens in June at NAC MHA
The Northern Appalachian Coal Mining Heritage Association unveils a summer education ride at its headquarters in Fairmont sharing space with Coal Country Miniature Golf. First riders include Katrina West and her grandsons Henry and Liam. The ride blends history from modern to older mining days with a motion gimbal, air effects, and a projected collapse scene. Initial turnout was modest but expectations rise as revenue potential grows toward restoring regional coal heritage.

Spurrier Medal of Honor hero honored with bridge dedication
A dedication ceremony in West Virginia honored Staff Sgt. Junior Spurrier, a Medal of Honor and Distinguished Service Cross recipient from World War II. The event at the West Virginia Department of Highways District 10 headquarters highlighted Spurrier’s 24 hour rear-attack near Lay-Saint-Christophe and Achain, France, where he killed or captured numerous Germans and earned the nickname Task Force Spurrier. Speakers, including local officials and Spurrier’s sister Hope Spurrier Mills, reflected on his heroism, postwar life, and the importance of recognizing veterans with bridge namings. The ceremony featured remarks on resilience, PTSD progress, and Spurrier’s legacy displayed via the Those Who Serve War Museum in Princeton.
