WWII veteran Garland survived Pacific plunge and built a life
In 1945 Milledgeville native Jim Garland, a WWII Navy weather crewman aboard PCE-842 class ships, was pulled from 30 to 35 foot seas after a cable failure. He later earned a Georgia pharmacy degree, married Mayce Branyan, raised two sons, and remained active in the community despite losing his hearing and enduring personal tragedies. He credits luck and faith, cherishing life and football at Georgia under coach Wally Butts.
