Survived by daughter Lynn James and two sons Douglas and David plus four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Cremation followed with ashes to be dispersed in Oregon. Memorials to American Diabetes Association.

Raven resident Leo E. Lawson dies after brief illness
Leo E. Lawson 78 of Raven, a World War II U S Army veteran and retired owner of Lawson Bros Coal Co, died Tuesday night June 4 1996 in a Richlands hospital after a brief illness. He was born in Swords Creek and served with four grandchildren and three great grandchildren among survivors. Funeral services held Friday at 2 p m in Richlands at Hurst Scott Funeral Chapel with burial following and honorary pallbearers from the Hardees morning crowd.

Woman pleads guilty in baby's stabbing death
Sandra Lee Futrell, 35, pleaded guilty to second degree murder in Spotsylvania County for stabbing her newborn daughter 13 times and dumping the body in a trash can after delivery in her bathroom on Oct. 28. She admitted attempting to suffocate the infant and used a steak knife when the child cried, facing up to 40 years at sentencing on Aug. 7.

A Jackson County physician Ernest R. Breitinger had his license suspended effective May 2 after failing to attend scheduled mental and physical evaluations. The board cited missed exams in March 1996 and June 1995, and noted prior scrutiny of his mental capacity by New Jersey in 1994. Breitinger sent threatening material to Clinton and Gore but was not deemed a threat by the Secret Service.
