Vicario ends Pierce's title run at French Open
Arantxa Sanchez Vicario defeated Mary Pierce 6 4 6 4 on Center Court to win the French Open and her first Grand Slam since 1989. Pierce, the 12 seed, made a strong semifinal run but committed 51 unforced errors as Vicario used defense and patience to seize the title. Pierce had hoped to become the first Frenchwoman since 1967 to win the event. King Juan Carlos attended the final as two Spaniards contended the men's championship later.
