Frost and rain cut Virginia strawberry season drastically
In Virginia late frosts and heavy rains slashed the strawberry harvest, with some farmers reporting losses up to 80 percent. About 330 growers, a $5 million crop class, faced a shortened season as pick-your-own operations reduced hours or closed. Prices remain low due to California imports, and growers implement irrigation or insulation to protect remaining plants.
