Weather forecast shows widespread showers across several states
The National Weather Service expects today to bring showers to most of Washington, Oregon and Idaho. Additional showers are predicted from central Montana through Minnesota and into Wisconsin and Iowa, across the Midwest to Tennessee and Oklahoma, and into Louisiana and Mississippi and Maine. Temperatures may exceed 100 in southern California, Arizona and New Mexico while northern Maine stays under 60.

Belgian diplomat smuggles heroin in diplomatic pouches
A Belgian diplomat Ludovicus Vastenavondt 57 based in New Delhi is accused of smuggling 22 pounds of heroin into the United States via diplomatic pouches. He is among seven arrested in a five month undercover India to New York drug pipeline investigation. He cannot claim immunity as he is not certified as a diplomat in the United States.

Forest service to burn standing timber to regenerate aged western forests
The Forest Service used napalm from a helicopter to burn aging lodge pole pine and Douglas fir in Taylor River District near Gunnison Colorado in a bid to regenerate forests and open grazing ground for mountain bighorn sheep. Officials say continued controlled fires in standing timber may rise as West forests age while experts caution about ecological disruption and longer term fire risk.
