Committee Concludes Trade Pact Hearings
Washington reports the senate finance committee wraps up hearings on the reciprocal trade extension program with assurances for American agriculture. Rep. Clinton Anderson pledges to guard farmers’ interests in negotiations while the committee plans executive session to consider extending government authority to cut duties up to 50 percent below 1930 Hawley Smoot levels. A further 50 or 75 percent cut is doubtful. Charles Taft of the Foreign Trade Department says the policy remains a moderate tariff approach, not free trade.
