Bridge collapses injures driver on Gibson County bridge
A 158 foot one lane steel deck truss bridge over Walker Creek in Giles County collapsed injuring Paul Bowman 39 of Bluefield who drove a 15 and a half ton concrete truck past an eight ton limit. Bowman was hospitalized with non serious injuries. The bridge built in 1932 was deemed structurally deficient before replacement work begun under a contract awarded last year. Virginia officials noted such bridges are monitored and maintained and that the weight limit is intended to prevent disasters.
