Greenspan faces conflicting advice on Fed policy
Washington AP reports economists split on Greenspan’s approach as he prepares to take over the Federal Reserve Board from Paul Volcker. Some urge tightening to curb inflation while others push for looser credit to sustain the sluggish recovery, amid rising inflation and a weaker dollar. Kudlow and Ratajevak argue the Fed overexpanded credit guidelines, warning of inflationary risks and advocating monetarist caution against policy missteps.

Late buying lifts stocks as Greenspan era begins
Stocks rose with the Dow Jones average gaining 16.39 to 2337.08 on light volume after Volcker's exit news and Greenspan praised as a Volcker successor. Market breadth favored advances, but traders remained cautious ahead of the Venice summit and May payroll data.
