Locomotives advance Norfolk and Western power with Mallet design
The American Locomotive Company supplied Norfolk and Western with articulated compound Mallet locomotives for heavy freight on steep grades. The engines combine front swivel groups with rear drive, delivering about 85 000 pounds of tractive force and total 535 600 pounds weight with tender. Norfolk and Western Mallet Locomotives Adopted for Mountain Freight
The Norfolk and Western Railway received five Mallet type locomotives from Baldwin, designed for heavy mountain freight. Each engine carries twenty wheels and two eight wheel driving groups with swing trucks for curves, and uses compound steam in rear high pressure then front low pressure cylinders. Weighing 390000 pounds engine weight and 560000 total with tender, they offer fuel and water economy and can be split into two sections for easier shop handling.

New Baldwin engines touted for Pocahontas division
Harry Weller trainmaster says Baldwin built engines X and Y are about ten feet longer than the American type, with air operated reverse levers. They feature large tenders holding 9000 gallons of water and 28,000 pounds of coal, smoother riding, less smoke and heat, and promise to replace older M class engines for freight hauling with safe 25 mph operation.
