Bill Archer recalls a era when long hauls defined life on the road. After delays at Alcoa plants and a weekend layover, he stopped at Ellis Park to gamble on horses to chase a freight load. A long shot trifecta paid $159, leaving him nine dollars ahead on the night.

Letter to the Editor challenges U S Chamber report as propaganda

300 Club for Literacy Drives Bookcase Project in Conway
In Conway Arkansas a volunteer driven literacy effort named Bookcase For Every Child has built 150 oak bookcases with starter books for children from low income families. Each book purchased makes a donor a member of the 300 Club for Literacy, aimed at raising funds to build 50 more bookcases per 15.95 dollar book sales. The program avoids taxes and grants, funding itself through book profits and community support, and seeks to expand across Arkansas and the nation. Jim Davidson leads the effort and can be contacted at 2 Bentley Drive, Conway.
