Obesity in Youth Triggers Early Metabolic Syndrome Risks
Yale researchers find half of very obese children show metabolic syndrome, a cluster of obesity related conditions raising early diabetes and heart disease risk. In a sample of 439 youths, 50 percent of severely obese and 39 percent of moderately obese had syndrome, with eight of 34 developing type 2 diabetes over two years.

Auto oriented cities linked to higher obesity risk
Lawrence Frank of the University of British Columbia reports a study linking driving with weight gain. About 91 percent of surveyed people said they did not walk to destinations, and many spent over an hour daily in cars. Healthy dietary guidelines aim to curb fat salt and soda
A new federal dietary guideline set will urge Americans to eat more fruits vegetables whole grains and lean proteins while limiting fat salt alcohol and sugary drinks. Based on 1999 2000 NHANES data from 4760 adults the study shows most diets fall short and warns of worse patterns among youth. It notes malnutrition despite overweight trends and stresses not eating less but eating differently.
