Buchanan aids citizens committee on abandoned mine land funds
Buchanan County Board of Supervisors agrees to assist the Dickenson County Citizens Committee and neighboring counties in pursuing Abandoned Mine Land funds. Officials note the fund, fed by coal fees since 1977, exceeds one billion dollars with Virginia receiving over 18 million but disbursing only 3 to 4 million yearly. The board proposes using about 30 percent to repair water utilities for Buchanan residents, creating local jobs.
