West Virginia Steel Industry Faces Closures Amid Slump
The West Virginia steel sector, once thriving from 1951 to 1980, now confronts collapse threats as imports and weak domestic demand bite. Employment fell from 26,200 in 1965 to 17,600 in April, with Huntington’s Connors Steel planning a July 1 closure and Weirton Steel facing possible shutdown without a buyer.
