Bluefield student wins statewide Ability Counts writing prize
Vickie Lynne Rothausen a senior at Bluefield High School won first place in the statewide Ability Counts writing contest. The award was presented at the State Capitol by James C. Welden on behalf of Governor Arch A Moore Jr. Her essay highlights exploiting talents of physically handicapped individuals and also earned fourth in the national competition earning an AFL-CIO funded trip to Nixon era events.

At a London area charity hush-in held at Thomas Bourne School Berkhamstead Belinda Jane Blakeney spoiled the event by saying thank you for a drink. The silent students had sponsors who pledged larger donations the longer they remained quiet. More than 120 dollars arrived after the incident.

Giles Class Visits NRCC We'll tour New River Community College
Giles High School students from Pearisburg Virginia visited New River Community College in Dublin. They viewed a 26 minute slide show A Career in Drafting and Design and toured the campus with assistant professor Harry Covey. Covey explained design department offerings and high job placement. The program offers cooperative education and extended opportunities for earning while learning. Many four year colleges accept the associate degree for transfer. Schools and groups are urged to arrange similar tours for general interest.

Martin Wins King Scholarship for 1973 74 to King College
John Paul Martin of Richlands son of Mr and Mrs John H Martin has won a King Scholarship for the 1973 74 year to King College Bristol Virginia. He is in the pre medical program at Southwest Virginia Community College and will enter King College in the fall after graduating this spring. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs J W Martin of Bluefield and Mr and Mrs Paul Weaver of Oak Hill.

Bluefield High School senior Michael Bernard Guyton is selected for the United States Military Academy Class of 1977 at West Point New York. He served as student body vice president, earned National Honor Society and Quill and Scroll honors, and was sports editor of the 1973 yearbook. He excelled in football basketball baseball and track and received the Dr Robert Gatherum Award co winner. He will be sworn in July 2 1973 at West Point.
