Painter-By-The-Teeth To Demonstrate At Skyland Craft Shop

Marvin Kessinger, a handless Princeton artist, will demonstrate painting by holding the brush in his teeth at Skyland craft shop atop East River Mountain. Demonstrations occur Sundays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on select summer dates through August, weather permitting. Paintings cost 5 to 15 dollars and his income derives from sales. demonstrations are free.

Davis Elkins Holds 63rd Commencement in Elkins

73 seniors received degrees at Davis and Elkins College on June 5. David Elwin Roberts of Bramwell earned a BA in Psychology as Governor Hulett C. Smith delivered the commencement address in the amphitheater on campus.

Parking Lot Attack in Bluefield Police Report

Three Monroe County youths, 16, were beaten by six or seven older colored boys in a Raleigh Street parking lot around 9 30 p m Saturday. They suffered minor injuries, a car door bent, and the gearshift torn from the auto. a distributor wire was stolen from a nearby parked car. Two smaller boys reportedly chased by the gang fled unharmed.

Mysterious Early Morning Shooting Probed in Bluefield

Police continue investigation after a man with a gunshot wound was found in Bluefield. He claimed the name Paul Cisco but was listed as Bob Esser Elkins, 38. He said two men shot him during a botched robbery after riding a freight train from New Jersey toward New Orleans.

Virginia Road Program Cited for Safety Honor

The Virginia Highway Department’s employe safety program earned a National Safety Council award of honor for the fifth time. Safety engineer Melvin G. Lyell said the 1966 frequency rate of 4.44 injuries per million man hours is likely the lowest among state highway agencies, with a severity rating of 373 and 79 percent better than peers. The program started 30 years ago and involves hundreds of supervisors and about 7,500 employees statewide.

McNeill Retires After 39 Years at Concord College

Dr Ellis Meade McNeill longtime biology department head at Concord College retires at term end after 39 years on faculty. An alumnus of Concord 1928 he earned a MS from West Virginia University 1930 and PhD from Duke University 1946. He rose from Oakvale teacher to full professor in 1939 and earned multiple honors.

Town of Tazewell officer slain in stabbing

Jack Sargent 30 year old Town of Tazewell police officer died at Bluefield Sanitarium from stab wounds suffered during an attempted arrest on April 11. Ralph Perry 18, of Thompson Valley, is jailed in Tazewell County charged with the stabbing.

Mt Olive Man Escapes Blaze Near Lashmeet

Cecil Hall escaped injury when flames gutted his one story frame house at Mt. Olive near Lashmeet. Neighbor Van Dillon woke him, and Matoaka Volunteer Fire Chief Charles Hall said the call came in at 5 39 a m after Dillon re entered to summon firefighters. Damage to contents and building was set at 5000 dollars. Firemen used 1250 gallons of water and one firefighter, Ricky Davis, suffered a minor cut on a broken window.

Bartley to Dedicate New $42,000 Bridge

Bartley in McDowell County will dedicate a new four two thousand dollar bridge connecting Route 3 and Route 15 Sunday at 4 p.m. County officials will attend as special guests. The dedication follows seven years of community effort led by Goodlow Combs. Residents previously faced difficult access to Route 83 during bad weather.
